The joke is lost on us

We meet like positive and negative in the dark

We bring a momentary heat that lights a spark

Of knowing from a moment long past

Yet the joke is lost on us

Words are spoken yet not for the first time

Promises that are broken in a future we cannot divine

Repercussions from an eternal now so vast

Yet the joke is lost on us

We meet as an unfamiliar face with a familiar taste

You melt in my heart as if you belong in this place

We sense some pressing unknown mutual task

Yet the joke is lost on us

You wrestle an anger you know not the cause

I cradle a longing that yearned from some deeper source

I dream of an answer to a question I forget before I ask

And the joke is lost on us
